Student budget: picking a cheap district
Students and interns care about two things most — low rent and proximity to campus or office. Hong Kong rent is location-driven; identical flats differ hugely between the core and the New Territories.
Instead of fixating on Central, look at cheap districts within a 30-minute commute. The three below are student favourites with friendlier rents.
Three cheap-rent hotspots
Kwun Tong has many old blocks and small units, with MTR access to Kowloon and Hong Kong Island — a popular pick on a budget.
Yau Tsim Mong (Mong Kok, Yau Ma Tei) is busy but full of small flats; Sham Shui Po is even more down-to-earth, with some of the lowest rents near the electronics streets.
Short lets and co-renting
If you don't want a one-year lease, try university halls, co-living, or renting one room of a two-bed. Co-renting is usually cheaper than a whole flat alone.
For short lets, watch stamp duty and deposit terms; use the rent-split tool to record each roommate's share and avoid verbal disputes.
Commute and campus: time is a cost too
A cheap district far from school can cost two or three hours a day — that time may outweigh the rent saved.
Use the commute-time tool to measure real travel to campus or office before trading "cheaper" for "closer".
Three-step landing
Step 1: set a budget with rent-affordability to see what share of income is safe. Step 2: list acceptable districts, ranked by commute.
Step 3: view in person — building age, maintenance, transport. Before committing, read the renting-in-hong-kong guide.
