Before you move
Moving is more than transport — count the hidden costs
Last updated: October 4, 2026
Moving looks like "just call a van", but there are many chargeable items — floor charges, parking fees, waiting time, packing materials and storage can all be extra. This page explains how moving costs are calculated, how to choose a mover, what to prepare, and how to get several quotes through referral. We provide no moving service and take no commission — we just help you understand the budget.
1.How moving costs are calculated
Fees usually depend on: floor and lift access at both ends, distance between addresses, volume and count of items, whether packing materials and labour are needed, and whether storage is required. A typical Hong Kong residential move starts around HK$1,500–5,000, but high floors, long distance and many items can push it far higher.
Before accepting a quote, ask item by item about floor charges, parking fees, waiting time, and weekend/month-end surcharges to avoid same-day add-ons.
2.How to choose a mover
Compare more than the headline price: reviews, whether transit insurance is offered, whether floor/parking fees are included, and whether a contract spells out liability. Hong Kong has local movers (e.g. EasyMovers, Safebox, PingOn) and larger networks.
Get at least two or three quotes to compare; a price far below market with no basic cover is a red flag.
3.Checklist before moving
Book early (2–4 weeks ahead in peak seasons like month-end, weekends, summer); declutter first to reduce volume; label boxes by room when packing; update your address (bank, government, subscriptions); arrange utility handover and end-of-tenancy inspection.
Carry fragile and valuable items yourself or insure them explicitly; measure bulky furniture against stairwells and lifts first.
4.Moving and referral
You can enquire with movers directly, or use a referral platform to collect several quotes at once and compare fee and service.
Referral usually costs you nothing — the platform is paid by the service provider; still confirm cover and fee details when choosing.
FAQ
How much does moving cost?
Commonly about HK$1,500–5,000 and up depending on floor, distance and volume; the exact price follows the mover’s quote.
Do I need insurance?
Confirm whether the mover offers transit insurance, or buy your own; fragile and valuable items especially should be insured or carried personally.
When should I book?
In peak seasons (month-end, weekends, summer) book 2–4 weeks ahead; in off-peak a week is usually enough.
